eBook Writing Tutorial - Step 5
By Skip Pratt
© 2002 - 2003

This week, you are ready to get moving on the process of writing your ebook.

Just so you know, I don't pretend to be a writing coach, expert writer or expert author. I have studied many methods of writing and have developed what I consider my own, which is what this tutorial expresses to you.

There are many, many resources for writing books and ebooks. I'll get you a list when we conclude this tutorial series in a few weeks.

For some of those resources right now, go to

For now, its time to get your paper and pen ready, or your computer and word processor, as the case may be.

The first thing to do is to write your ebook's title and sub title. Depending on the type of ebook you are writing, you may likely find your first onset of "writers block". That's ok. Relax. Nobody knows your doing this yet!!!

Just write some titles. For ideas on how the print book world does it, go to amazom.com and search by some popular categories. Read the book titles. Study them. Do the same with the sub-titles.

Which ones draw you in? Which are the most interesting? Which ones make you run the other way? Now study them and ask yourself "why"?

It is said that 80% of books sold are sold strictly based on the Title. I don't know who said that, but I believe it.

So write some titles. Write 5 or 10 titles.

This is changeable you know! Don't get stuck here. Just write and come back to them later.

Now it's time to outline your ebook's chapters or sections, depending on the type of ebook you are writing. One of the best ways to do this is to consider the processes or methods that underlay your topic(s).

What is a process or method you ask? Think of them as a recipe. A process or method is nothing more than a series of steps that accomplish a specific task.

Sometimes those steps occur in series, or one after the other. And sometimes those steps occur in parallel, or simultaneously.

As you consider the processes or methods, each step of the process can be represented as a Chapter of your ebook. Again, the idea here is to take action, not out-think yourself!

As you write your outline, keep in mind that you are trying to teach, educate, inform or entertain your reader.

So start writing.

You may find that it takes you several drafts to put together a compelling title, sub-title and outline. Don't be afraid to revise your outline; several times if necessary.

Next week, we'll get into some specifics of writing technique.

Most of all, enjoy this work, as if it is not fun then it will feel like a job.

See you next week!

That’s it for this week’s exercise. Send me an email to and let me know how it is going!
