The Naked Truth Of Selling On The Internet
© By Skip Pratt

Here’s the NAKED TRUTH and my experience (and rub) with selling on the Internet:

Building a web site with lots of content that is well “themed” and search engine friendly DOESN’T SELL! Moreover, building a web site with a pure sales letter doesn’t usually receive very good search engine rankings.

How do I know? I’ve tried both. And, I continue to experiment, along with my partners.

Here’s why a well-optimized (for search engine ranking) site doesn’t sell well: to have high search engine rankings, you have to have multiple pages. Internal links on a website demonstrates website ranking strength. The more internal pages, therefore internal links, and the better the search engines like it (Google in particular likes sites with loads of pages and content).

Fair enough.

The problem with a site with lots of pages (Knowledge Download has over 120 total content pages now) is if/when your visitor shows up at your web site, they get easily distracted with all those extra pages, fail to read your sales letter or worse, fail to take action.

The exact opposite is also true from my experience. A well written, single page sales letter will sell well, but won’t get much search engine traffic. I suppose its possible to have both, but to rank well with say, Google, your one page sales letter would have to have such keyword density that it would be practically impossible for a visitor to logically read it.

So what is the answer to this dilemma?

There are several different strategies you can take to achieve high rankings as well as robust sales. Here they are:

1. Create multiple web sites. Some are for high rankings; some are for selling products or services.
2. Create your sales site, but make your most desired action for the visitor to register for your ezine or newsletter. Use email marketing to deliver your content. Leave the web site for the sales message.
3. Create your multi page content site for high search engine rankings but make your most desired action for the visitor to register for your ezine or newsletter. Use email marketing to deliver your sales and promotions messages.

What am I doing?

At http://www.knowledge-download.com we have chosen to build a site with a large population of free content. The site ranks well and gets plenty of search engine traffic.

I have lots of pages to satisfy Google. On each major section of the site, I've tried to define the typical problems our target user faces and explains our solution to those problems.

But that’s not all. I’ll tell you more in a future newsletter.

Of course, we're doing a lot more marketing also. I'll reveal more in future issues. Stay tuned.
