Sony HVR-Z1 and HDR-FX1 Handbook

HDV Technology, Production, and Post-Production

The Sony HVR-Z1 and HDR-FX1 Handbook provides the information necessary for you to successfully transition from SD to HD production. Each chapter builds on the previous chapter so you can gain a working understanding of HDV technology as well as practical production and post-production skills.

The book is designed to meet the needs of prosumers and professionals who are currently shooting with one of the DV formats. It is not an “HDV for Dummies” book that simply expands upon the often poorly written camcorder manuals. Rather, it is a comprehensive introduction to HDV technology, HDV shooting, HDV post-production, and distribution.

The first four chapters introduce the technology you'll be using when you shoot and edit 1080i HDV.

Chapter 1:     Introduction to Digital Video and Audio

Chapter 2:     All About MPEG-2

Chapter 3:     All About HDV

Chapter 4:     Image Capture Technology

With an understanding of MPEG-2 and HD technology, Chapters 5, 6, and 7 introduce the skills necessary for working with the new Sony HDV camcorders.

Chapter 5:     Introduction to Your HVR-Z1 and HDR-FX1

Chapter 6:     Setting-up Your HVR-Z1 and HDR-FX1

Chapter 7:     HVR-Z1 and HDR-FX1 Shooting Guide

Chapter 8 introduces you to the ways you can connect Sony camcorders and deck to your editing system.

Chapter 8:     HVR-Z1 and HDR-FX1 Making Connections

Because HD MPEG-2 video is much more difficult to edit than DV-based SD video, you must make fundamental choices in choosing how you will edit your source material. There are multiple workflow options, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is critical to understand these trade-offs. HD export options are also presented in Chapter 9.

Chapter 9:     HDV Workflows

Many videographers will shoot interlace video intended to be transferred to 35mm film. Nevertheless, many shooting interlace video will not transfer their production to film. Yet, they may want to create a "film look." Chapter 10 covers both topics.

Chapter 10:   Working with HDV and Film
