How to Finish That Book
by Michael Knowles

What three-syllable word is the key to finishing the book or other project with which you've been struggling? Give up?

Devotion.

Devotion is the practice that takes you through the hard spots, keeps you working in the face of your fears, and gets the job done. It is the secret to completing your book. Without it, even the best intentions will not motivate you, for devotion is the key that unlocks the door to motivation.

How do you learn devotion? By practicing. Here's how.

  • Devotion is a choice. Your ability to choose can take you through all hard times. Choice is the first step toward devotion.
  • Devotion is action. It involves taking one step after the other. And all you have to do is take a single step. Then take the next. After awhile, the steps come automatically because Nature delights in change. Movement is change.
  • Devotion ensures meaningful change.
  • Devotion is an act of love. If you find that you cannot devote yourself to a project, ask yourself whether you really love it. If you don't, are you wasting your time and energy by trying to do it?
  • Devotion informs our thoughts and activities. It teaches us to disavow the garbage others feed us and the negative self-talk that many of us have practiced for much of our lives. It delivers us from anxiety and depression, and nourishes us as we travel the long road.

Devotion is the courage to find and do what truly needs to be done. If your work isn't returning what you need to survive, it could simply be because it isn't needed badly enough. Look for the pain that others have in their businesses and in their lives.

If you can help them relieve that pain, or even take it away for them, Nature will support your devoted efforts. It has always worked this way, and will always work this way.

Is the practice of devotion easy? It must not be, for the stories of frustrated dreams are legion on this planet. But at least you get to choose.

What did you choose today?
